Election to the academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded an American scientist or engineer. Cocke was recognized for his "distinguished and continuing achievements in original research." The NAS is a Washington-based organization whose purpose is "to promote science and its application to human welfare, and to investigate and report upon any subject of science or technology whenever called upon by the Government of the United States."
