Cocke Elected to the National Academy of Sciences

Retired IBM Fellow John Cocke has been elected to the
National Academy of Sciences (NAS).  Election to the academy
is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded
an American scientist or engineer.  Cocke was recognized for
his "distinguished and continuing achievements in original
research."

The NAS is a Washington-based organization whose purpose is
"to promote science and its application to human welfare,
and to investigate and report upon any subject of science or
technology whenever called upon by the Government of the
United States."  The NAS was chartered by Congress in 1863
and has approximately 1,550 members, 80 emeriti and 250
foreign associates.
