I know you said 'last word' but I just came across the message set.

There are at least two major impediments to the cable industry's desire
to get into serious datacomm:

1.  They do not have a history providing the kinds of service reliability
required by the business community; and

2.  They don't have a solid answer to the technical problem of "uplink",
that is, for transmitting from the consumer up to the head-end.  There are
serious capacity limitations in current systems and I don't think the new
stuff handles it all that well.
