Subject: USA problem new HR 3636 problem
To: farber@central.cis.upenn.edu From: rjs@farnsworth.mit.edu (Richard Jay Solomon) Subject: new HR 3636 problem The Markey markup contains a very stupid provision pushed by Ralph Nader for the FCC to regulate the Internet so that it only charges a flat rate. The worst part of the provision is that it *regulates* the "Internet" (whatever it is) and specifically puts it into the US Code for the first time. Who the hell needs that??!!! What should we do about it? It is not in the Hollings bill, so if there is any controversy the conf committee will drop it. Richard **** and******** From: farber@cis.upenn.edu (David Farber) Subject: from an old friend Cc: Bcc: X-Attachments: >Worse: If any part of the essential internet gets locked in as a regulated >service, it is a dead duck as far as future federal R&D agency interest >goes. It will be as safe from the politics of procurement as FTS 2000, and >about as useful as a source of innovation!
