Subject: Term Project
This project consists of a brief summary that explains a vast wealth
of information on the Soviet Union. The resource is available from the
Library of Congress via anonymous ftp to the following address:
seq1.loc.gov .
The files are soviet documents thathave been translated into english.
Much of this information could be very useful to students in the NSA
curriculums. The files are all txt files and are easy to access. The
path to the file listing is:
pub/soviet.archive/text.english .
Several files I found interesting are listed below;
c1police.bkg => provides background info. on soviet secret police
w1sovper.bkg => provides background info. on soviet perspectives of
the Cold War
v1pstwar.bkg => provides background info. on soviet estrangement
during the Cold War.
Note that each of these background files has an accompaning document
that goes into more detail.
Attached to this brief introduction is the README file. This file gives
a current listing of all available files by subject. It includes the
ftp address, path and file names. Good luck and I hope you enjoy
reading some of this material.

In this archive are files relating to a Library of Congress
exhibit of materials from the newly opened Soviet archives.
These files are available by anonymous ftp to seq1.loc.gov.
The text files are located in /pub/soviet.archive/text.english.
The files are grouped by topic. First listed is a background
statement (.bkg files) setting the scene for the accompanying
English translation of the Soviet document(s) (.doc files).
These are translations of the same pages available as images,
and therefore are sample pages only, not complete documents.
The filenames and brief captions follow below.
Image files are located in /pub/soviet.archive/images.gif.
The images do not comprise the complete documents but are
sample pages from the documents. A GIF viewer is needed to
see the images. vpic48.zip is available in /pub/soviet.archive
along with qextract.exe if you need unzipping software as well.
General information about the Library of Congress and the
Soviet Archives exhibit in particular are available in
/pub/soviet.archive. These files include: about.lc (a
brief history of the Library of Congress), conferen.log
(a transcript of a live, online discussion held June 18,
1992 between the Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington,
Mr. Pikhoia of the Russian Archives, and users of America
OnLine from all around the U.S.), and libntro (the Librarian
of Congress' introduction to the Soviet Archives exhibit).
An online brochure of the "Revelations from the Russian
Archives" exhibit is also available in /pub/soviet.archive
in two formats: a DOS print file called handbook.iii to be
sent to a LaserJetIII printer, and handbook.ps to be printed
to a postscript printer on either the DOS or Macintosh
platform. Since the brochure was created on DOS platform,
using a LaserJetIII printer, the best results are achieved
by printing the online brochure to a LaserJetIII printer
using the DOS copy command
(copy/b filename lpt1).
