CRYSTAL BALL ON GIGACHIPS
        As new generations of microprocessors quadruple capabilities every
three years, industry observers are speculating on the processing power
that gigachips -- chips with a billion tiny transistors connected by a maze
of circuitry -- will unleash. Ultimately, gigabit technology could lead to
silicon brains even more intelligent than human ones. "The potential of the
computer is way, way beyond human potential," says one researcher.
