NyNex has just established some card operated phones in
NYC. Their phone cards say on the back


"The introduction of Change Card will change the way you
make your public telephone calls. By 1996, 5,000 yellow
Charge Card telephones will be installed across NYC. Just
as NY is a Leader in Finance, NY will be a Leader in
Communications"


What a leader!!. The cards are essentially the same as the
NTT system deployed across Japan for years.


Leading from behind is a new one.
