Subject: WIRELESS AT UCSC
WIRELESS AT UCSC The University of California at Santa Cruz has completed a successful nine-month pilot project to test the use of wireless technology by professors and students. Fifteen students were given access to a "Ricochet" network that uses radio waves for transmitting within a limited area of the campus. Santa Cruz is now considering using the Ricochet technology to wire dormitories in eight residential colleges. Metricom, which installed the network, supplied students with special wireless modems equipped with a two-inch rubber antenna for transmitting signals to receivers mounted at regular intervals around the campus. The company is also building networks at Stanford University, the University of Oregon, and Oregon State University. (Chronicle of Higher Education 7/7/95 A15)
