att right now is a $69B company (not counting NCR, er, GIS, which takes it
to $77B). ATT now splits: Bell Labs is going to be part of a $20B company,
which looks kind of like western electric.  Anybody expect an equipment
company to maintain their commitment to bell labs, esp. given the
immediate almost-factor-of-four cash flow reduction, and the nature of
the business (which looks like cut-throat, low-margin).


Prediction: no more nobel prizes for people at bell labs. Maybe no more
bell labs? This is very sad.
