The Convergence of Computers and Communications -- Part II
David J. Farber
Alfred S. Fitler Moore Professor of Telecommunications Systems
University of Pennsylvania
*******************************************************************************
Twenty Five years ago, an experiment at the UC, Irvine
showed the ability of the new distributed systems
technology to create large a virtual computer system out of
individual computers and telecommunications systems.
During the following years, research in systems and
advancements in telecommunications has given us the
potential for extending those ideas to allow for the
creation of a National Backplane Computer.
This talk, taken from the 1995 SIGCOMM Award Keynote will
explore this line of research and will project where this
further blending of communications and computer technology
will lead.
