The U.S. government could not have asked for a better demonstration of the holes in its encryption policy. On Monday, a perfect copy of the source code for Pretty Good Privacy, Inc.'s flagship encryption product, PGP 5.0, was posted on the University of Oslo's Web site -- without breaking the United States' laws regarding the export of encryption software. Today, anyone can download the source, compile it, and begin sending encrypted messages to anyone in the world. If the software had been shipped on a disk, its export would have been illegal. ...
