Subject: IP: Self-promotion by office holders on government sponsored Web sites
Date: Sun, 25 Oct 1998 12:44:39 -0500 To: farber@cis.upenn.edu From: Timothy Barmann <tim@cybertalk.com> Dave, This story uses a local candidate to explore the fuzzy issue of office holders using taxpayer-sponsored government Web sites to promote themselves at election time. http://www.projo.com/report/pjb/stories/01365012.htm 10.25.98 06:48:54 Does promotional material belong on state sites? By TIMOTHY C. BARMANN Journal-Bulletin Staff Writer The World Wide Web site says that General Treasurer Nancy Mayer is a ``pillar of public trust,'' a ``watchdog of taxpayer funds,'' a ``warrior against corruption.'' You would expect to find such laudatory remarks in an advertisement, or perhaps on a Web site promoting Mayer's campaign for the office of state Attorney General. But these are headlines that appear on the General Treasurer's official government Web site -- paid for by tax dollars. --Tim Barmann Timothy Barmann Technology Writer The Providence Journal tim@cybertalk.com 401-277-7369 http://www.cybertalk.com/
