Media's pecking order

A friend of mine was recently offered a lot more money than he already makes
at a major newspaper to go to work writing full-time for a news-oriented Web
site. He was also offered a slew of stock options to sweeten the deal.
Despite the increase in pay, he couldn't bring himself to take the deal
because he felt he would be lowering himself a few rungs on the media
pecking-order ladder. Money isn't everything. He was concerned about
credibility, power, and prestige. The Web just doesn't currently provide it.
The question in my mind is: will it ever?
