The Legacy of Microsoft's Trial

The first round of settlement talks between Microsoft and the Justice
Department has begun. And at this defining moment, all parties would do
well to step back and meditate upon a much larger issue that the Microsoft
trial has raised.

That issue is not whether Microsoft should be divided and conquered, nor
whether it will be granted the freedom to choose whether to add an Internet
browser or other features to its Windows operating system.
