Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2001 19:27:40 -0400 To: farber@cis.upenn.edu (David Farber) From: Richard Jay Solomon <rsolomon@dsl.cis.upenn.edu> http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/269/nation/Kabul_drops_opium_ban_boom_feared+.shtmlThe price for a kilogram of Afghan opium has plummeted in the last two days from $500 to about $100, according to United Nations narcotics-control officials, who attribute the drop to a rapid selloff of stockpiles because of fears of an imminent attack. ''Our sources tell us that people who have stocks of opium are trying to get rid of them as quickly as possible,'' said Mohammad S. Amirkhizi, senior policy adviser at the UN Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention in Vienna.
