Subject: IP: Tauzin-Dingle Act pulled from House consideration
Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2001 14:03:06 -0800 From: "Robert J. Berger" <rberger@ultradevices.com> From: American ISPs <aispa@processrequest.com> http://www.aispa.org As you know, the leadership of the House of Representatives announced that they were prepared this week to undertake consideration of HR 1542, the Tauzin-Dingell "Internet Freedom and Broadband Deployment Act of 2001." AISPA members and opponents from the competitive industry immediately went to work when the announcement was made one week ago today. Thousands of e-mails, faxes and phone calls flooded Capitol Hill. Sue Ashdown visited over a dozen Hill offices, meeting with undecided Representatives and telecom staff, encouraging them to vote against the bill. An army of Bell lobbyists were also on the Hill, attempting to convince members that the bill needed to pass before Congress adjourned. In the end, they lost, and we won. House Majority Leader Dick Armey announced at 3:00 p.m. EST that HR 1542 was being pulled from consideration this year, and would be scheduled for debate in March of 2002, at the earliest. It means that a very, very important battle has been won, but the war is still on. On behalf of the AISPA family, thank you for all of your help and involvement. Often times, you wonder if you can really make a difference, especially when the odds are stacked so heavily against you. Congressman Armey's announcement proves that you can. -- Robert J.
