Despite ACTA's adept use of her name for publicity purposes (and they are
incredibly good at publicity and fundraising, if little else), Lynne Cheney
has nothing to do with the organization today and has on several occasions
declared publicly that she hasn't read their "report." I say this not
because I'm a big fan of hers, which I'm not (although I like her husband),
but because her name is giving credibility to an organization which doesn't
deserve it--and its enemies, by equating Cheney with the organization, are
helping it enormously.

If your readers would like to advance academic freedom and make the people
at ACTA jealous rather than proud to be attacked, they can donate to the
Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (http://www.thefire.org),
which maintains a consistent defense of freedom of speech on campus and has
done so in the face of enormous criticism (and hate emails) since 9/11. (I
am on FIRE's board of advisors, a politically diverse group.)

As an aside, ACTA apparently lifted the HTML code for the FIRE website to
create its own. Unfortunately, they did not lift FIRE's principles as well.
