The metal detector beeped as I walked through it
at Midway in Chicago yesterday.

Not unusual; my belt buckle sets it off about 50%
of the time. I was waved aside to be wanded.

I stood there for a minute, ignored, while the
private security person doing the wanding
leisurely discussed her break schedule with a
co-worker.

When she finally started, I noticed something
unusual: her wand was silent. It passed over my
watch: nothing. My rings: nothing. My belt buckle:
nothing.

"Ok," she said, waving me on.

Puzzled, I asked her, "Is that thing working?"
She looked at the wand. She made an adjustment.
It began beeping.

"Guess it works better when it's on, huh?"

I'll feel much better when airport security is
staffed by people who are in their current positions
because they couldn't master the shake machine
at McDonald's.
