Seduced by this growth in broadband subscriptions, Microsoft made a critical decision. The device would be equipped with a broadband ethernet connection--instead of a conventional dial-up modem--for online games and other services. The company's choice was driven by a desire to reserve the Xbox for games with high-quality graphics that would require high-speed data transmission.
