My latest weekly Wired News commentary addresses the status of
ICANN, particularly in light of their latest meeting.

It's titled:

   "ICANN Needs Another *Long* Trip"


[ "That footloose band of happy wanderers, the globe-hopping ICANN board of
directors, is back from their latest meeting, this time from Shanghai,
China. 
Say what you will about the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers, they know how to pick expensive destinations for many of their
junkets. 
With all the Internet technology at their disposal, you'd think such
meetings could be held virtually over the Net, with a significant savings in
time and money. 
But outside of the potential for frequent flyer miles, exotic meeting sites
help ensure that many of ICANN's most vocal critics, often lacking travel
budgets, won't show up to pester the board in person.
After this latest meeting, it's clear ICANN still needs to be pestered.
