Mr. Lucas -- or perhaps his speech writer -- has his facts completely
wrong.  In 1996, at the advent of DVD technology, he is correct that a
number of studios were fence-sitting on whether to join in selling their
content on this new digital medium.  And there were two systems with
different levels of technical protection and encryption: The current (then
called "open") DVD, with its relatively weak CSS or "Content Scramble
System," and then there was Divx, a more seriously encrypted system that
also relied on being authorized by a central server to unlock the player
each time you wanted to watch a program, which most of the studios (except
Time-Warner) backed.  Consumers reacted so strongly against Divx, that the
studios were forced to go with the much weaker protection system and its
book-like and CD-like "first sale" business model, which they were firmly
against.  One major studio hung on longer, avoiding the DVD market, because
it wanted a better deal on disc royalties to sweeten its bottom line.  (It
didn't get them.)  All the studios -- and Fox in particular -- were unhappy
and fearful about this new digital medium and its potential for
piracy.  But they are now enjoying extraordinary margins (far better than
VHS videocassettes) and a brand new chance to re-sell their libraries to
consumers once again.  DVD is also turning the home video business into a
sell-through market from a rental one.

By the way, the analog VHS videocassette -- its only copy protection being
the easily-defeated Macrovision system -- has been worth over $100 billion
to Hollywood over the course of its lifetime, despite Jack Valenti's fear
that it would be the end of the movie studios.  And, ironically, it was Fox
who then bucked the trend (and Valenti) and was the first of the studios to
make its content available on the fledgling videocassette medium.

So, to characterize the advance of DVD as one which convinced the studios
to release their product only with stronger encryption methods, he is
completely, historically incorrect.

One last note.  Two years ago, when Lucas was quite vocal in his stance
against DVD because of its potential for piracy, he simulataneously
authorized the sale of the "Star Wars" trilogy and its sequel on the
totally _unprotected_ VideoCD market in Asia, where it did extremely well
despite the intense bootlegging adn counterfeiting that goes on
there.  Furthermore, his fears about digital media must be somewhat
assuaged by the fact that "Episode Two" is one of the fastest and
best-selling discs of the year, with millions sold in the first few days,
despite the fact that it has been one of the most heavily bootlegged titles
on the Internet.
