Subject: [IP] programming cell phones
------ Forwarded Message From: "the terminal of Geoff Goodfellow" <geoff@iconia.com> Date: Sun, 15 Dec 2002 18:46:27 +0100 To: "Dave E-mail Pamphleteer Farber" <farber@cis.upenn.edu> Subject: programming cell phones The author writes about his experience getting "hello world" working on a cell phone has some interesting things to say about vendors who use Qualcomm's BREW---code for which requires Qualcomm's corporate approval---versus the more open approach taken by vendors who use Sun's J2ME. Did you know, for example, a given phone model (e.g., Motorola T720, ... ) for a given carrier (e.g., AT&T, Verizon, ... ) executes a single type of code (e.g., J2ME, BREW, ... )? [say you get a contract with Verizon, and you choose the Motorola T720, the phone executes BREW only. -or- on the other hand, if you get a contract with AT&T, and you choose the Motorola T720, the phone executes J2ME only.] Conclusion: QUALCOMM BREW IS NOT GOOD FOR CONSUMERS AND DEVELOPERS SUN's J2ME IS GREAT FOR CONSUMERS AND DEVELOPERS It's a cool article: http://www.colinfahey.com/2002dec14_j2me_cell_phone/j2me_phone_apps.htm =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- geoff.goodfellow@iconia.com * Prague - CZ * telephone +420 603 706 558 "success is getting what you want & happiness is wanting what you get" http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/99/01/biztech/articles/17drop.html http://www.tapsns.com/members-bio/geoff-goodfellow.shtml ------ End of Forwarded Message ------------------------------------- To unsubscribe or update your address, click http://v2.listbox.com/member/?listname=ip Archives at: http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting-people/
