Dave,

There's was a nice piece of audio on the Marketplace program
last week about artist-owned record labels that's appropriate to this
discussion. The numbers involved are really quite amazing: Aimee
Mann, who has sold almost a million records as part of Til Tuesday,
has never seen any profit from that effort - because the record
company expenses have still "not been recouped", according
to the major label that owns the rights to those albums.

Well worth a listen.
