This already takes place. Some of the major record labels have been
working on projects to do this since at least late 2001. I was approached
by a Cambridge, UK - based company to help implement a large-scale
network designed to look like a large group of DSL users.

Behind the scenes, a network of servers would then start producing
duff content based on the search terms, but based on properties
of the valid files present in the p2p network.

Some of the technology used in the network built on that made by one
Travis Hill, the CEO of MediaEnforcer.

I don't have many more details than that as I turned the job down
once I realised what it entailed, but I do know that there were
significant problems to overcome with making the system scale.

Given that most of the junkbots I see on p2p networks today are still
so primitive and easy to ignore, I would surmise that the degradation
tech still hasn't come close to the extravagant claims being made for
it when I saw it.
