Court says Verizon must reveal song swapper names
Thursday April 24, 3:24 pm ET

WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - A U.S. court said on Thursday that Verizon
Communications (NYSE:VZ - News) must reveal the names of customers suspected
of downloading copyrighted songs from the Internet without permission.

A trade group for the five major recording labels has sought to make Verizon
reveal the names of two customers they suspect may be downloading hundreds
of digital songs without permission, while Verizon said such a move would
violate customers' privacy.

U.S. District Court John Bates sided with the Recording Industry Association
of America (News - Websites) in January, but Verizon asked Bates to keep the
customers' names private while it appealed the decision.

On Thursday, Bates denied Verizon's request.

"Because Verizon is unable to show irreparable harm, or that it is likely to
succeed on an appeal of its constitutional or statutory challenges, the
Court also denies Verizon's request for a stay pending appeal," wrote Bates,
who serves in Washington.
