Wednesday's trifecta of FTC activities was a rare confluence of such highly
public events. But it illustrated the vigilance of a regulatory agency that
many worried would atrophy under Muris, an appointee of the most ardently
pro-business president in decades.

Muris, in an interview, says no one should be surprised. His job, he says,
is to defend free markets. Genuine competition, which protects consumers,
``needs basic rules of the game,'' he says. ``We enforce those basic
rules.''
