Subject: [IP] Palm to purchase Handspring
Reply-To: <reiter@wirelessinternet.com> From: "Alan A. Reiter" <alan.reiter@verizon.net> To: "David Farber" <farber@cis.upenn.edu> Hi Dave, It was just announced today that Palm will be purchasing Handspring. Handspring, which was founded by Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky -- who co-founded Palm -- in the past few years has switched its emphasis from "plain" PDAs to wireless enabled "communicators," for both GSM and CDMA cellular networks. Handspring does not have a PDA with integrated WiFi or Mobitex. Palm has a few wireless-enabled devices, such as the new WiFi-enabled Tungsten W and the Mobitex-enabled i705. It will be interesting to see how the two companies approach wireless. Technologically, it looks like a good match since both companies offer PDAs with different types of wireless capabilities.
