Dave
I am doing research on Digital Music, which will look at the advent of satellite radio (such as Sirius and XM in the U.S.) and MP3, and how both have changed listener habits.
The so-called death of American radio is somewhat exagerated, although Brent Staples, the author, is correct when he analyzes the sheer blandness of "corporate" FM radio. All a listener has to do is switch from FM to satellite, and the problems which Staples outlines are, for all intents and purposes, gone.
Although an early adopter market at this time, satellite radio is personalizing the listening experience and giving listeners what they really want, rather than what is determined by a corporate playlist.
Sirius' stream jockeys are experts in their genre, not talking heads. The range and depth of Sirius' and XM's programming is unparalleled, with music ranging from rock, pop and R&B to jazz, classical and country. Some recordings are made in Sirius' studios in Rock Center. And underserved markets - or those missing an entire genre, such as the New York metro area when it comes to country music - are far better served by this type of service.
