If NASA suspected there might be some damage to the tiles from the liftoff, why didn't they do a space walk and inspect the outside of the shuttle directly? They might not have been able to fix it, but at least they could have known to not try a reentry. Maybe go to the space station. I just read a news article: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=68&ncid=68&e=2&u=/nyt/200306 28/ts_nyt/nasasnewchargeshuttlerepairinspace that talks about using satellites to look at the shuttle, but they seem to be ignoring using the people in the shuttle. It does, after all, have people in it and they have spacesuits ....
