Basic Work Still Needs Doing To Improve Aviation Security

THE MIDDLE SEAT
By SCOTT MCCARTNEY
The Wall Street Journal

A French company wants to sell airlines a "Flight Bomb Killer," which is a
large duffel designed to muffle the damage of an exploding bomb, assuming
you find the bomb and can get it into the bag. And it's really only
effective against about 200 grams of plastic explosive -- about the size of
a cigarette pack.

But SEMA World, the manufacturer, says it's all about peace of mind. "You
have to be lucky first," admitted Michel Rigaud, head of international sales
for SEMA World. "But the most important thing is to feel secure."

Likewise, the Skyjacker Neutralization Technical System designed by French
engineer Eric Ghasnavi might make you feel more secure, but it hardly seems
practical. On display at the Paris Air Show, the system claims to be the
ultimate answer to thwart hijackings -- a remote-controlled camera and gun
mounted on tracks in the ceiling of airplanes, controlled by a technician
locked in an armored compartment inside the plane, with his own toilet, of
course.

Uh-huh.
