Delivered-To: dfarber+@ux13.sp.cs.cmu.edu Date: Sat, 24 Jan 2004 13:35:15 -0800 From: Paul Kedrosky <pkedrosky@hotmail.com> Subject: IP: Credit card skimming at Florida gas stations X-Originating-IP: [66.27.66.14] X-Sender: pkedrosky@hotmail.com To: dave@farber.net From today's Florida Sun-Sentinel: A new and sophisticated type of credit-card fraud has apparently claimed scores of victims in Florida as they innocently set about filling their cars or trucks with gas, state officials warn. The scheme, which has been detected at gas stations along major highways from Orlando to Naples, involves the use of an electronic decoding device -- known as a "skimmer" -- to intercept numbers from people's credit or bank cards as they slide them through the magnetic reader on the gas pump, officials said. One credit-card company told the state it has traced at least 100 fraud cases More: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-cardtheft0124,0,6161 859.story?coll=sfla-home-headlinesP.
