Subject: [IP] more on Army sends Ski Resort howitzers to Iraq (not a joke)
From: Brian Dunbar <brian.dunbar@plexus.com> Sigh. The guns were (if I'm reading the news reports correctly) nearly new that the Army had decided it didn't really need. However, the 105mm guns have a decided advantage over the 155mm guns the Army and Marines went nuts over in the past twenty years; they're lighter and more portable (and thus better for the war being fought in SW Asia). The 105mm can be transported (for exmaple) 'as-is' by the heavy lift helos. The towed version of the 155mm used by the Marines must be field stripped before air transport or it's just too heavy. As well ... five guns is one firing battery. This is not a small investment. It's possible the Army is acting smart on this.~brian
