Subject: [IP] Variable Displacement Engines Make a Comeback - Good Timing
Begin forwarded message: From: Jim Zellmer <zellmer@virtualproperties.com> Date: September 3, 2004 4:28:26 PM EDT To: dave@farber.net Subject: Variable Displacement Engines Make a Comeback - Good Timing Hi Dave: I find technology fascinating, as this example shows: http://www.zmetro.com/archives/000692.php Honda's new 2005 Odyssey Minivan features a variable displacement V-6 (some of the cylinders are turned off at cruise, saving fuel). This is not a new idea, but perhaps timing, technology (more advanced computers and software) and the right organization will make it work. GM tried in the early 1980's, to their credit. These type of refinements should save quite a bit of gas over time - if they are widely adopted.
