Subject: [IP] Social Security Administration rejecting heterosexual marriages from gay-friendly towns

The NY Times reports that the Social Security Administration is rejecting all marriage licenses -- for both heterosexual and homosexual couples from a variety of towns that have issued marriage licenses to gay couples. The official reason, according to the agency's web site, is because "the legality of such documents is still unresolved at the state level." The fact that New Paltz, NY, for example, issues different forms to the different types of couples is apparently irrelevant. The AP reports that neither they nor the Times have gotten any response from the agency. The nasty, suspicious part of me wonders if someone is using this to try to sap straight support from gay marriages. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/19/nyregion/19marriage.html --Steve Bellovin, http://www.research.att.com/~smb ------------------------------------- To manage your subscription, go to http://v2.listbox.com/member/?listname=ip Archives at: http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting-people/
