Diego Garcia is at the top of the Chagos Trench located just to our east
(hence the island chain name of Chagos Archipelago). This trench is very
deep and the steepness of the grade from the trench to the top of the island
does not allow tsunamis to build up before they were to come on shore.

Hi Dave,

Here's a question for any of your IPers.

Has anyone heard a report from the large US base at Diego Garcia
island in the Indian Ocean? This base, I have been told, is very low
to the water and was in the tsunami's path. The island is an atoll.

The base at Diego Garcia was/is a major staging area for the Afghastan
and Iraq wars and a holding area for many Iraqi and other prisoners.

This island is almostly directly in line between Sumatra and Somalia
on the African coast. It is south and a bit west of the southern tip
of India.
