As a networking researcher (and longtime licensed ham), I often find
much of the amateur radio community's neo-ludditte opposition to new
technologies like BPL frivolous and even faintly embarrassing.
Knee-jerk fear innovation dishonors their rich tradition at the
cutting edge.

But this comment in defense of BPL is just silly.  First, of course,
not all disasters cause the power infrastructure to fail.  Second, and
most importantly, many of the frequencies that might be interfered
with by BPL are used for longer-range communication (such as from
within a disaster area to outside).  Even if the power is out at the
transmitter's side, the receiver might be hundreds or even thousands
of miles from the disaster, and subject to any interference caused by
local BPL services.
