Subject: [IP] speech synthesis, signal processing, speech recognition, and human-computer dialogue used to study autism accurately
------ Forwarded Message From: Liz Ditz <ponytrax@batnet.com> Date: Tue, 01 Mar 2005 10:13:51 -0800 To: <dave@farber.net> Subject: speech synthesis, signal processing, speech recognition, and human-computer dialogue used to study autism accurately For IP if you wish: If your family has been affected by autism, you may find the following study (and its implications) fascinating: " To assess prosodic abilities, the project will use speech technologies initially developed at CSLU for speech synthesis, signal processing, speech recognition, and human-computer dialogue. These technologies will be used to measure prosody in the children's speech, or to create speech stimuli to measure the children's abilities to understand prosodic cues. "We are only now becoming aware of the potential of these technologies for studying communication disorders," said van Santen. "They were never developed for this purpose, but it turns out that we do not have to reinvent the wheel. Here is how these techniques make a critical difference. In the past, researchers would have to learn how to listen to prosody, and different listeners would never agree. But now, we have the quantitative models that allow us to make statements such as: 'This child's prosody is only 25 percent connected with meaning.'"" full text of press release, and details of experiments: http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2005-02/ohs-ors022805.php Contact: Jim Newman newmanj@ohsu.edu 503-494-8231 Oregon Health & Science University OHSU researchers study communication disorders in autism ********** Liz Ditz ponytrax@batnet.com cell: 650-303-5967 blog: http://lizditz.typepad.com Success: fall down seven times, stand up eight. ------ End of Forwarded Message ------------------------------------- To manage your subscription, go to http://v2.listbox.com/member/?listname=ip Archives at: http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting-people/
