Of course the really clever student would have looked at applications other
than their own in hopes of having those students applications rejected for
"ethical concerns"  and thereby increasing the clever student's chance of
making the cut by reducing the applicant pool.

One can not presume that the applications were looked at by the applicants
themselves. (although I admit it is likely)
