Subject: [IP] more on Law would put 'In God We Trust' in schools
------- Original message ------- From: Bob Frankston <Bob2-19-0501@bobf.frankston.com> Sent: 7/4/'05, 17:37 In elementary school I was in the music class and we were taught to sing the Pledge of Allegiance. That version did not have "under God" -- the teacher explained it was added in the 50's (the class itself may have been in 1960). At my high school (Stuyvesant in NYC) graduation I was surprised to find I was far from alone in my silence during that phrase. It's not that I really cared about pledging allegiance to a flag -- as noted, it was a meaningless mantra but even then I found the under god part offensive. I guess "they" are right about those of us in the Northeast. -----Original Message----- From: owner-ip@v2.listbox.com [mailto:owner-ip@v2.listbox.com] On Behalf Of Dave Farber Sent: Thursday, April 07, 2005 18:12 To: ip Subject: [IP] morre on Law would put 'In God We Trust' in schools ------- Original message ------- From: DV Henkel-Wallace <gumby@henkel-wallace.org> Sent: 7/4/'05, 7:57 "Proponents" may consider it harmless, but injecting more mindless repetition of the word "god" seems to be the best way to get kids to tune it out. Unless kids in Pennsylvania are different from those anywhere else. Achieving that would be fine with me, but is it really what they intend to accomplish? Repeated, public avowals of faith may appear threatening to some, but to me they always come off as the actions of people trying to compensate for their own doubts or self-perceived lack of faith. Those with deep and strong religious convictions are usually content with their beliefs and feel little need to proselytize. -d On 07 Apr 2005, at 05:07, David Farber wrote: > Law would put 'In God We Trust' in schools > > Thursday, April 07, 2005 > By > Bill Toland, Post-Gazette Harrisburg Bureau > [...] > proponents say it's an historical motto that harmlessly brings a > little bit of God into schools, while opponents say it's a possible > breach > of the church-state ------------------------------------- You are subscribed as BobIP@Bobf.Frankston.com To manage your subscription, go to http://v2.listbox.com/member/?listname=ip Archives at: http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting-people/ ------------------------------------- To manage your subscription, go to http://v2.listbox.com/member/?listname=ip Archives at: http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting-people/
