Interested folks might want to read the National Academy of Sciences'
take on all this, concluding that bills like Santorum's are
"counterproductive and diversionary." The government, the NAS
committee concluded, has an "obligation to make its information as
widely available as possible to those who paid for it?the taxpayers.
Although some in the private sector would prefer that the NWS not issue
forecasts, . . . scientific, legal, and economic arguments
overwhelmingly support the continued dissemination of NWS forecasts and
other weather products." You can find the report at
<http://www.nap.edu/books/0309087465/html/6.html>.
