Were I not trying to be less cynical I'd say the plan was the brainchild of the airlines, hoping to continue the $N/minute captive call cost from back-of-the-seat phones. Surely airline lobbyists don't have that muchpull...
Could somebody please explain to me the technology in those "skyphones" that makes them unusable for plotting hijacking and terrorism? Of course, the terrorists could not afford to use them, since they must save up for retirement...
