Dave,

I wonder how long it will be before someone who passes the background
checks purposely reveals that they got through the "trusted" security
line with contraband, by virtue of being in the program, just to show
how it can be done?

Quite a system.  If a potential terrorist can themselves pass the
background check -- or recruit someone else who can -- they've been
handed a free pass to the lower security line.  Sure, *very nearly*
everyone who joins the program will be an innocent.  But if a
terrorist was intent on attacking a plane, it seems likely that
they'd be *at least* as interested in the "Registered Traveler"
program as anyone else.  And if they succeed in their task after
passing through the lower-security checkpoint, there will be hell to
pay, of that we can be sure.
