Subject: [IP] more on more on CNN special on Iraq war intelligence failures

Militarily, the US did win Tet, but losses were so high that US public opinion afterward turned against the war. As Ho Chi Minh said: "You will kill a thousand of us and we will kill a hundred of you - and we will win". With more than half the American public now of the opinion that George's War was not worth the cost now, imagine how We The People will react if the Iraqis impose Tet-level casualties on the invading army. But Tet was a public relations/propaganda disaster back in the United States, possibly because of the anti-war bias of the media. If there is a "Tet like attack on Baghdad" will history repeat itself? The insurgents will be undoubtedley be annihilated if they stand and fight so the question is whether they would win the propaganda war? Except for the "home front" propaganda issue, the US military is probably hoping for a Tet-like attack where they can confront and utterly destroy the enemy. And the "home front" is much different today than in the Tet-era: no anti-war protests on college campuses, soldiers are admired not reviled, there is strong political support for the troops in the field, the President has a strong core of support, and there is an effective rightwing/pro-war press (talk radio, Fox News Channel, the Washington Times, rightwing bloggers, etc.) to counter the leftwing/ anti-war press. So, a "Tet like attack on Baghdad" might be the best thing that could happen. If there is a Battle for Baghdad looming, and the Green Zone isisolated, the war may not drag on for years, as most people are predicting. -c On Sat, 20 Aug 2005, David Farber wrote:Date: Sat, 20 Aug 2005 17:38:02 -0400 From: David Farber <dave@farber.net> To: ip@v2.listbox.com Subject: [IP] CNN special on Iraq war intelligence failures -----Original Message----- From: "Lauren Weinstein"<lauren@vortex.com> Sent: 20/08/05 11:55:22 AM To: "dave@farber.net"<dave@farber.net> Cc: "lauren@vortex.com"<lauren@vortex.com> Subject: CNN special on Iraq war intelligence failures Dave, Of possible interest (noted particularly for those IP readers who don't regularly watch TV news): "Dead Wrong" -- Inside an Intelligence Meltdown Sunday, August 21 (tomorrow) 8pm EDT CNN (scheduled repeats at 11pm, 2am, and later in the week) --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein lauren@pfir.org or lauren@vortex.com or lauren@eepi.org Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 http://www.pfir.org/lauren Co-Founder, PFIR - People For Internet Responsibility - http://www.pfir.org Co-Founder, EEPI - Electronic Entertainment Policy Initiative - http://www.eepi.org Moderator, PRIVACY Forum - http://www.vortex.com Member, ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com DayThink: http://daythink.vortex.com [Message truncated.
