September 13, 2005 A $79.95 Opportunity to Breeze Through Security By JOE SHARKEY called Verified Identity Pass. If Mr. Brill gets his way (and he usually does), his company's Clear Registered Traveler Program could soon have many members paying $79.95 each year to obtain an identity card that allows them to pass through airport checkpoints without being treated like a prisoner being hustled to the cellblock.
That's wonderful! Why, for just $80 per cell member, any terrorist group leader can find out whether the Feds think any of his agents are suspicious. Of course, the Feds aren't stupid, so they will clear some or all of the suspected agents anyway, putting a secret marker in their files so that they can be watched more carefully. (If the Feds know who the bad guys are anyway, why aren't the Feds doing something about that *now*? Silly question.) Meanwhile, all the salescritters and executives for ten thousand firms across the US will be applying for the program too, having the company pay the $80 expense and flooding the Feds with a hundred thousand applications ASAP. What will be the false negative rate? What will be the false positive rate? -dsr- ------------------------------------- To manage your subscription, go to http://v2.listbox.com/member/?listname=ip Archives at: http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting-people/
