Interesting news - especially with this Apple/Warner conundrum going  
on. We are seeing steep drops in record sales that are obviously  
connected to equally sharp rises in online single sales - and now the  
record companies are beginning to feel like they got suckered,  
methinks... Not even mighty Microsoft are getting them to the table  
these days - at least not when they try to bring the prices down:

Microsoft's plans to launch a subscription-based music service are on  
indefinite hold, after the software company walked away from  
negotiations with the Big Four record labels. The central bone of  
contention was royalties. The labels were looking for between US$6  
and US$8 per user per month, a figure Microsoft balked at.  
Apparently, those figures are in line with what the current  
subscription services like Napster, RealNetworks, and Yahoo Music pay.
