Diebold, Computer Pioneer, Dies
John Diebold, one of the earliest of early adopters, died at his home  
after suffering from esophageal cancer, his nephew said. He was 79  
years old. Mr. Diebold, an advocate of computers during the age of  
Eisenhower, layed out his vision of a computerized future in the 1952  
book "Automation." The book, considered part of the modern management  
canon, presented the idea of using programmable devices in business.  
In 1963, Mr. Diebold presented newspaper executives with a plan to  
use keyboards for inputting stories that could be edited on computer  
consoles -- a system that did not became standard until the 1980s.
