A note from Canada --
There are two (extreme) options for the supervisor of an employee
(whatever the age)
Option 1 -- be able to fire employee X without giving any reasons
(or cause) for the firing
and
Option 2 -- having kept careful records of employee X's performance
(whether required by law or not) to explain to X the
cause of the firing and, possibly if the employer
is fair,
tell X what need to be done by him to avoid this
in future
at other employment.
What the French students are protesting is the firing without reason
now part of French law.

But consider the current state of affairs. Right now it isSurely there is a middle ground between guaranteed employment and "Fire at will!"?Did you misread what I wrote as "guaranteed employment"? I wrote "guaranteed unemployment." The "middle ground" you hope exists is a situation where some young workers have jobs they can't lose, and the rest of them are unemployed. Perversely, that might actually be an optimum solution. You see, nobody has any fear or uncertainty. The employed young workers know they won't lose their job, and the unemployed young workers also know they won't lose their job, because .... they don't have one to lose. If you're in the situation that France is in, with lots of young workers going without jobs, and you think that's a bad thing, you should remove all barriers to employment. An inability to fire a worker is a barrier to employing them in the first place. -- --my blog is at http://blog.russnelson.com | A computer without Python is Crynwr sells support for free software | PGPok | like a CPU without memory: 521 Pleasant Valley Rd. | +1 315-323-1241 | it runs, but you can't do Potsdam, NY 13676-3213 | Sheepdog | anything useful with it. ------------------------------------- You are subscribed as n.solntseff@cogeco.ca To manage your subscription, go to http://v2.listbox.com/member/?listname=ipArchives at: http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting- people/
