Sadly, Lauren, Sergey Brin clarified his statement shortly after,
dashing any hopes that we might have had that he and the company
would follow the principled approach:

After admitting earlier this week that Google's sellout to Beijing
stood in stark contrast to the company's vaunted "don't be evil"
absolutism, co-founder Sergey Brin said Google intends to abide by
Beijing's censorship restrictions anyway. "I think it's perfectly
reasonable to do something different," Brin said. "Say, OK, let's
stand by the principle against censorship and we won't actually
operate there. That's an alternative path. It's not the one we've
chosen to take right now. We sort of committed to try out this path
and we are still actually trying to get it to work."
