Subject: [IP] using VOIP to clobber international mobile roaming robbery
Begin forwarded message: From: DV Henkel-Wallace <gumby@henkel-wallace.org> Date: January 28, 2007 11:11:33 PM EST To: David Farber <dave@farber.net> Cc: Bob Frankston <Bob19-0501@bobf.frankston.com> Subject: using VOIP to clobber international mobile roaming robbery Dave, for IP if you're interested,It seems someone has decided to use the internet to clobber international GSM roaming charges, which are currently highway robbery. These guys awayphone allegedly give you a handful of SIMs which give you a local number in each country you plan to visit and then use the internet to ship the calls back and forth (at least that's what they seem to be telling the press -- I couldn't find any actual technical mention on their web site).
If that's what they're actually doing it's yet another cool example of using the internet to do an "end-to-end run" around the telco oligopolies.
