At the time they were running a DEC PDP-8 in the basement of the Herman Brown building on-campus. We typed PL/1 programs onto punch cards, put the cards together with a rubber band, and stuck the stack into a slot to be run. A half-hour later we'd get back a print-out. Mine usually had an error in the 4th or 5th line. (I'm ADD, not OCD.) This is what Dr. Kennedy had to work with when he started out. Today Rice is among the leading computer schools in the country, and he had a lot to do with that. Wish I were younger and could have gone through the whole program again...
