One of the main talking points of the Nader campaign was that the Democrats are no different than the Republicans, and that seems to be reflected in this post. As it happens, we have a counterfactual to the election results of 2000 - while Bush does nothing about Greenhouse gases and his Vice President derides conservation as nothing more than a personal virtue, Gore arguably does more than anyone to make global warming a mainstream concern. The fact that Nader was representing the Green party in his endeavor is almost a painful irony. And while the rich and corporate folk of the Republican party help to deliver themselves large tax cuts at the expense of our children, the rich and corporate Democrats did not do that under Clinton, would not have done it under Gore, and would not have done it under Kerry (whose family would obviously gain the most from repealing the "death tax"). So while it is true that both parties need to raise money, and rich and corporate folk have more of that than anyone else, it is clearly towards different ends. Indeed, if the premise of the post were true, people would be less concerned over which party is in office than in earlier days, but that is hardly the case.

Since when are Democrats in the 21st century viewing themselves as
politically progressive? Nader can only be a spoiler if he actually
has an attractive set of ideas, which he seems to.

Severo's kind of attack on Nader just shows how self-hating and right-
wing modern Democrats have become, perhaps starting with Clinton.

The sad truth is that the Democrats have become just another party of
the rich and corporate folks inside the beltway. Folks who think
liking rock and roll makes them hip, and who have adopted the same
sorry schemes that confuse distributing wealth and power held by
individuals with commonwealth and common welfare held by society.

Ralph Nader, whom many of us hold responsible for bringing us Bush
et al, is threatening to repeat his maniacal blunder. Knowing when
to compromise in order to inch closer to your goals is the essence
of wisdom. Intransigence such as Nader's is sheer egotism. The
country has paid an enormous price because too many liberals were
equally intransigent and saw Nader as their hero. If you're one of
those, shame on you - and if he runs, don't make the same mistake
again. Many Democrats deserve to be chastised, and I'm all for his
leaning on them and shoving them toward more progressive policies.
But in running as a presidential candidate all he can possibly do
is help the Republicans by bleeding off Democratic votes.
